During the 17th and 18th centuries, the country of Spain was a powerhouse on the high seas of the Caribbean. Phillip II was the king of Spain during this time and he spent a lot of the regions money on building the biggest and intimidating warships known for that time period. The most feared warship of all was known as the Protegelosahora.
This warship was captained by a man who went by the name of Cazalla although everyone referred to him as Captain Cazalla of the Protegelosahora. Such was his reptuation as a ruthless Spanish captain that no one dared address him by anything other than his given title.
The Protegelosahora was host to many types of seaman, most who made their way in life as privateers. They would travel back and forth through the channels of Jamaica, waiting with baited breath for other boats to attack them. In those days, you could not attack first as it was to be known as an act of piracy. Piratical adventures often resulted in hanging and this was always on the minds of the sailors, so they avoided it where possible unless they were certain they would not be caught.
Protegelosahora one day ran aground and was beached on the shores of Port Royal, which was located in south east Jamaica. Known for being a town that hated the spanish, the crew were promptly hanged and the hulls of Protegelosahora raided for it’s treasure. Inside the hull were hundreds of thousands of doubloons headed for the coffers of Phillip II, King of Spain.
When news arrived back at his palace that the Protegelosahora had beached on the shores of Port Royal, rumour has it that he went into a mad rage and killed his jester and other servants.
